EXHIBITION DETAILS
Clifford Smith
Oceans Ten
March 3 - April 15
Gallery I will feature an exhibition of ten recent ocean paintings by New Hampshire based artist, Clifford Smith.

Smith's paintings attempt to render the ocean's movement and sound, depicting a style much like Gerhard Richter's blurred photo-paintings. His photo-realistic canvases depict the surface of water, the movement of the waves rendered blurred to evoke a sense of constant movement. And although Richter's blurred masterpieces come to mind when looking at his work, Smith's process of painting is entirely organic. Although Smith uses photographs as a reference for his images, he does not project the photo onto the canvas to paint as Richter did.

Smith states: "The constant movement of the water and the variation of that movement has inspired me to try to express the tension between the two dimensional surface and the three dimensional reality. A vivid tension existing amongst the two will communicate the desired impact of the work."

GEMS
